Dancing with Life’s Changes

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Change is good.” In the world of acupuncture, we are more likely to say change is inevitable. And it usually creates stress, regardless of whether we think it’s good or bad.

We are all always dancing with life’s changes. After all, the only time that the body stops changing oxygen into carbon dioxide is after death. We are continually transforming as long as we are alive. And even after that, the body changes into yet another form.

Whenever we are facing something different, our entire being must adjust. Most of us react by creating stress hormones. These hormones depress the mood, metabolism, digestion, sleep, and general ability to heal. This is called fight-or-flight mode, which creates a state of inflammation. Over a period of time, we become less resilient, more fatigued, and more vulnerable to illness and disease.

Happily, the body produces anti-inflammatory hormones and goes into a state of relaxation during and after treatment. This is how acupuncture can lower inflammation throughout the body. In ‘warm-fuzzy’ mode, we experience a sense of ease, increase energy, and improve our immune system.

It’s for this reason many people come to their treatment feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and/or irritable and leave feeling much more relaxed and in less pain. And this feeling lasts longer with regular treatment. It’s the same as exercise and meditation; the more regularly it’s done, the greater the benefits.

The world today is changing rapidly. Some changes are great and others are not so great. Acupuncture can be extremely helpful in dancing with life’s changes.

Acupuncture and Distance Healing

As our world turns to a global network, many people are finding more health resources at a distance. A lot of therapists have been developing methods of distance healing for their patients. Since acupuncture is energy medicine, it is ideal for just this sort of thing. Acupuncture uses the needle to focus qi/energy in the qi network of the body. As the ancients knew, and as physics has verified, all of the universe is nothing more than particles and waves of energy, appearing to be solid objects. And none of us can dispute the force of gravity, which is invisible in all ways but the scale and planetary movement.

The sun is 93 million miles away. And it can literally cook an egg on the pavement with nothing but photons. This is similar to how distance healing works. Distance doesn’t lessen the power of energy! Acupuncture is all about movement of qi. Therefore, it is very easy for an acupuncturist to do their craft over any distance, as long as the patient is ready and in a receptive state.

The beauty of virtual acupuncture is you can lie down at home on a couch or a bed and relax. Meanwhile, your acupuncturist performs the session in their office or anywhere that is conducive to privacy. After the session, there is no need to get up and drive home. In fact, I frequently sign off quietly and let people soak in the results in their own time. And the results are excellent. Sometimes the distance session goes even deeper than an in-person visit.

So whether you are living in a remote region or staying home due to covid, acupuncture is still available to you.

Acupuncture, Grief, and Renewal

“My barn having burned to the ground, I can now see the moon.” –Misuta Masahide, 17th Century Japanese Poet and Samurai. His meaning? Loss can be freeing. Anyone who has cared for a dying loved one knows the mixed feelings that follow death and an end to suffering.

Not too many years later, Benjamin Franklin said, “The only things certain in life are death and taxes.” In fact, the only truly certain thing in life is death.

Plainly put, everything that is alive will die. And every death, or perceived loss, causes grief. This is regardless of whether it’s the death of a loved one, a relationship, or a dream. And we can’t avoid it, though many of us try.

This is what the sages were talking about, and where acupuncture can be of great use.

Acupuncture puts people in balance with Nature. If Nature knows how to let go, so do we. It is an inborn ability and can only be forgotten through imbalance. Life-changing incidents, illness, untreated trauma, or poor lifestyle choices can cause difficulties in letting go. This can damage the metal element of the qi system.

A metal imbalance can show up in other ways. Asthma, constipation, skin issues, and behavioral issues like hoarding are just a few. When a person cannot grieve, it puts a halt to everything else. That pause won’t end until the grief is addressed.

We can restore balance, move forward, process our grief, and live our life more fully. Acupuncture accomplishes this by nourishing our energy and removing blockages to the flow of the Qi.

Once we embrace our past as a part of us instead of something in our way, we are more free to shape our destiny. This is because we can only make room for something new by letting go and realizing that loss can be freeing. Just as Autumn leads eventually to Spring, grieving fully leads to new beginnings.
